宇多田ヒカルさんの『道』の歌詞で価値観がひっくり返った話
宇多田ヒカルさんの初のベストアルバム『SCIENCE FICTION』にも収録されている、
『道』という曲をご存じでしょうか？
その歌詞に、こんな一節があります。
一人で歩いたつもりの道でも始まりはあなただった
佐野が『道』を初めて聞いたのは、2016年でした。
きっかけはアルバム『Fantôme』です。
いままでの自分の生き方を、全否定されたような気がしました。
『道』を聞くまでは「オレはオレの足で立っているし生きている。
これまでもこれからも」と思っていました。
ひとに頼らないことが強い生き方で、良い生き方だと信じて疑いませんでした。
いま思えば「あなた」を無視することで「自分は強い」と思いたかったのかもしれません。
強がるほど「なんだか寂しい」とぼんやりと思っては、「また打ち消して」を繰り返す日々です。
一人で歩いたつもりの道でも始まりはあなただった
『道』の影響を受け入れてみようと思いました。
すると「あなた」の存在を認めてからの方がさみしさや被害者意識は消えました。
不思議なものですね。
ひとでつくられている自分を感じた方が、強さまで得られるなんて。
「自立とは依存していることに気がつくこと」なんて言葉を、ようやく受け入れられるようになったのかもしれません。

The Lyrics of Hikaru Utada’s “Michi” That Turned My Values Upside Down
Are you familiar with the song “Michi” by Hikaru Utada? It is included in her first greatest hits album, “SCIENCE FICTION.”
There is a line in the lyrics that goes like this:
Even the road I thought I walked alone, began with you
I first heard “Michi” in 2016, introduced through the album “Fantôme.”
It felt like a total denial of the way I had been living. Until I heard “Michi,” I believed, “I stand on my own two feet, I live by my own means. I always have, and I always will.” I never doubted that living independently, without relying on others, was a strong and good way to live.
Looking back, perhaps I wanted to feel strong by ignoring “you.” I vaguely felt “somewhat lonely,” and kept denying that feeling, repeating the cycle day after day.
Even the road I thought I walked alone, began with you
I decided to embrace the impact of “Michi.” After acknowledging the existence of “you,” the loneliness and victim mentality disappeared.
It’s curious, isn’t it? Feeling that I am made by others even gives me a sense of strength. Maybe I’ve finally come to accept the saying, “Independence is realizing you are dependent.”

Truly, Hikaru Utada’s lyrics are the best. I feel as though I was born to encounter this one verse—it’s that moving (a bit of an exaggeration).
